#HPStories: Brendan

#HPStories is a series of interviews and articles that features members of the community that trains with us here at Higher Performance. As coaches and staff, we are continually inspired and motivated by the perseverance of our members as we tag along their fitness journeys through life. And we are so proud to share those stories with you!

Q: Hello Brendan! Thank you for joining us today! First, could you share with us a little bit about your fitness experiences?

I was an avid tennis player from young, played for school teams and right through National Service but gave up 8 years ago due to wonky knees. I was also never a gym going person, until joining Higher Performance.

Q: So, how did you find out about Higher Performance?

I found out about the gym from my then pilates guru. I enjoyed pilates, but wanted something more physical. I got what I asked for! In fact, the first time I met Myren – he made me puke! It was a combination of being overzealous coupled with ‘some encouragement’ on something called the air-bike.

Q: I think all of us can totally relate to that burn afflicting by that air-bike! What were your initial goals when you first joined Higher Performance?

My goals have not changed much since I joined. I am on the journey to lose weight, improve my fitness and gain strength to carry my frame into my older years.

Q: And how has that process been for you?

I have degenerative cartilage issues in both my knees which necessitated three knee surgeries in the time I’ve been a member!

Q: Wait, 3 knee surgeries!? How do you find the motivation to get back into training each time?

Even though it has derailed and slowed me down, the encouragement along with the bespoke plans that carefully cater to my needs really helped! I’ve never had a program customised for me before, based on my abilities. And knowing that the program takes all of those factors into account, gives me peace of mind when I train. That plays a huge part in keeping me going!

Q: So, a little birdie from the office told us that you stay pretty far away – what motivates you to make that trip to train?

I guess some effort needs to be put in – and it’s not too far a drive from home (laughs) Besides, I’ve not felt comfortable in a gym till I found Higher Performance. It’s the coaches and the fellow members that just make the environment welcoming.

Q: Has training at Higher Performance has impacted you and your daily life?

Yes, it has become part of my weekly routine. It’s my happy place!

Your ‘happy place’? That’s very endearing! Why do you say that?

Well, I’ve tried a few other venues, and didn’t connect. After I discovered Higher Performance, I couldn’t train anywhere else.  It’s comfortable, it’s welcoming… It’s not intimidating. And most of all, the coaches are passionate, knowledgeable and they care. They make it their mission to help us become a healthier and better version of ourselves.

Alright Brendan, final question!
Q: If you could speak to your ‘younger self’ (prior to your HP experience) – what advice would you share?

For one, I’d tell my younger self to preserve the abs I had from OCS and Army training! Be wiser in terms of the diet and never give up. And most importantly: Life is a team sport, you never walk alone.

We couldn’t have said it better ourselves. Thank you so much for sharing with us your journey today!
